LANDMARK AVIATION

SAN DIEGO INTL. AIRPORT, CA.

Certified LEED Platinum Complex, largest FBO complex at SAN, provides public art, built on a brownfield site.

Rivers & Christian architect-of-record for a new, ground-up Fixed Base Operator (FBO) facility for Landmark Aviation at San Diego International Airport. R&C working with tammy Edmonds Design provided complete architectural and interior design services to execute the general aviation, five hangar and three terminal complexes. Sited on a 12.4 acre brown field site on the airport’s north side, the campus includes aircraft hangars totaling approximately 118,000 sq. ft. and 31,000 sq. ft. of new terminal buildings. Additionally, the project provided 255,000 sq. ft. of aircraft ramp & 140,000 sq. ft. of paved parking and landscape area were constructed. The Landmark terminals provide aircraft owners/passengers, reception/check-in, lounges, conference rooms, cafeteria, and pilot support areas for flight planning, exercising and aircraft fueling, maintenance, and storage.

Landmark’s vision was to have the complex their “top of the line” premier facility, as well as provide one of the most sustainable general aviation facilities in the country. As such they committed to the airport to provide a LEED Platinum Certified campus. Among the project’s sustainable strategies are solar energy production, high efficiency lighting and mechanical systems as well as water efficiency strategies. The design exceeds California’s energy codes by nearly 50%. They also provided a public art component by Ken Gangbar on the exterior of hangar 3 facing the new public access road.
